Volume concerns travel from Charleston, South Carolina to New Haven, Connecticut, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hunt discusses laughter, love, literature and criticism, religion, and nullification. Entries also include discussions of a thirty mile railroad trip out of Charleston, his return to South Carolina College, family matters, meeting a family from Sumter District (S.C.) that was moving to Alabama, his trip by water from Norfolk (Va.) and Baltimore (Md.), and his arrival in Philadelphia.
